Assessment

Psychoeducational assessments answer questions such as:
- How does my child learn best?
- Is my child gifted?
- Why is my child struggling at school, and how can I support his/her learning?
- Does my child have an intellectual or developmental disability?
- Does my child have a learning disability or ADHD?
- How are my child’s behavioural, social-emotional, and/or health concerns impacting his/her learning? How can parents, teachers, and others help?
Psychoeducational assessments typically include:
- Tests of cognitive functioning (e.g., intelligence, memory, executive functioning)
- Tests of academic achievement
- Screening of behavioural and social-emotional concerns that may affect learning
Social-emotional assessments answer questions such as:
- Why is my child having difficulty getting along with others, and how can I help?
- Is my child anxious or depressed, and what treatments are recommended?
- Why is my child having behaviour problems, and how can they be addressed?
- How is my child coping with a difficult life experience? How can I help?
The assessment measures and techniques included in social-emotional assessments vary depending on the presenting questions and concerns.
All assessments include:
- Review of the child’s development, school history, and any prior assessments
- Interviews with primary caregivers, teachers, and other relevant adults
- In-person feedback and discussion of results and recommendations
- A detailed written report
- Referrals to relevant services and treatment providers
